March 21 is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Adopted in 1966 by the United Nations General Assembly, March 21 was chosen because on that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa. The NEU and the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) "are committed to fighting racism and promoting employment equity in the workplaces we represent".
