April 28 is the National Day of Mourning in Canada and has been observed since 1981 with the passing of the Workers Mourning Act of 1980. This important day is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives, suffered injury or illness on the job, or experienced a work-related tragedy. The purpose of this day is not only to honor those who have killed or injured in the workplace, but to also renew our collective commitment to improve safety and health in the workplace to prevent further tragedies. The NEU asks Members to lead their workplaces by observing a moment of silence at 11:00 am on April 28. This important day falls just before Safety and Health Week (May 1-6). Please visit our Facebook page and neu.ca for information and resources related to that week. Remember, no one should go to work worried about being injured or not coming home at all.
